The San Francisco Fire Department is advising people in the Bayshore area of the city to be alert to rising tides and likely flooding this weekend, according to a report issued by the department on Friday.

The King Tides are the highest astronomical tides of the year and are expected to start Saturday morning and continue until Monday morning. Low lying areas around the city's shoreline are going to be affected, the post said.

King Tides happen when "tidal forces maximize" at the same time as the moon comes into alignment with the earth and the sun when the moon is nearest to the earth and the earth is nearest to the sun.

Along with Bayshore, the Pacific shore will be affected as well, such as the area around Elkhorn Slough. Beachgoers are advised to keep informed about the day's tide cycle.

The King Tides are expected to peak on Sunday.

People are advised, if traveling around the area, to be careful as some roads may be closed.
