Following an investigation into Evan Nuemann's activity online, officials have found that he had deep ties to Eastern Europe.
Justin Charters, a Senior Intelligence Analyst at Echo Analytics, looked deeper into Neumann's background following the announcement he'd been granted asylum in Belarus. "They had business in Russia, they also had some business in Ukraine that we saw through an Instagram hashtag and so he had those interests," Charters told KCBS Radio. "We also saw that he had lived in Eastern Europe for quite some time."
He found that Neumann lived in Dresden, Munich, Moscow and Kyiv. His primary business was a handbag company, which appeared at a prominent Moscow fashion show.
On his personal website, Neumann mused about election fraud and the killing of Ashli Babbitt, who was fatally shot by Capitol police during the riot.
"He promoted some really wild conspiracy theories," Charters said. According to the intelligence analyst, Neumann was careful to wipe much of his material online. It's unclear whether he has since resurfaced.
"He's cautious enough that if he does have a new digital footprint, we don't know the screen name, we don't know the alias, we don't know what he's working under," he explained.
Charters said Neumann will continue to be used as a propaganda piece on Belarusian state TV.
