WASHINGTON (KMOX) — Don't stress about that missed call from an unknown number. It might be a scam, warns the Federal Communications Commission.
The agency issued a warning recently about a wave of "one ring" robocalls targeting specific area codes, often calling repeatedly during the middle of the night. After ringing only one time, the calls are an attempt to get people to call back — which often is directed to a 900 number that charges consumers per minute.
Reports of calls coming from a 222 country code have been linked to these scams, according to the FCC. New York and Arizona have seen a large amount of these incoming calls lately. The country code is that of the West African nation Mauritania.
