CRESTWOOD, Mo. (KMOX) — Two years after the demolition was finished, there's still nothing but 47 acres of mud, rocks and weeds at the old Crestwood Mall site, making some residents nervous.
"Something would be better than nothing," said Amy Butz who lives on a street where the back windows of homes face the vacant site. "When the leaves aren't there I just see dirt and emptiness. I think for me there's a little bit of anxiety as to how this is going to affect our property values."
The developer is scheduled to give a presentation and answer questions at a public hearing at Crestwood City Hall at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
City Administrator Kris Simpson says it's his understanding that the developer has "a number of tenants and a good project lined up."
However, no major tenants have been announced. Simpson says the holdup may be that lenders are requiring more documentation on the project before they commit to it.
"There is an aspect of impatience with the project, and that's understandable and reasonable," Simpson said, "but this is also the closest we've ever been in the last 15 years to having this project move forward and redeveloped."
The plan calls for building apartments, retail and entertainment destinations on the site. Crestwood Mall was once a thriving shopping center with packed parking lots, but business fell off, as other malls began to spring up around the region.
Simpson says no deadline has been set for the developer to deliver a deal, but such a deadline could be set at some point by the Crestwood Board of Aldermen.
