ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Who knows at this point what trick-or-treating on Halloween will look like amid the pandemic – but the lunar cycle is shaping up to make this year as spooky as possible with a rare kind of full moon on display.

There will be a 100%-illuminated full moon on Saturday, Oct. 31. It's the first Halloween full moon since 2001 and to make things even better it's also known as a blue moon because it will be the second full moon to happen that month. The first full moon of the month will be on Oct. 1.

Because of that, this full moon has a special name: "Halloween Blue Hunter’s Moon"

The Farmer's Almanac says when you look at the full moon on Halloween night, it won’t appear blue in color, but you'll be seeing something very rare since a full moon hasn't appeared for everyone, in all time zones since 1944.

If you miss this one you'll have to wait another 19 years, as the next 100%-illuminated Halloween full moon after 2020 won't happen until 2039, 2058, 2077, and 2096.
