ST. LOUIS (KMOX) — The sponsor of a plan to allow Metrolink riders with proper training to carry concealed guns on the light rail line is predicting it will pass this session.

State Senator Bob Onder of St. Charles says people have a right to self-protection.

"We see that the current law is just having the effect of disarming law-abiding citizens and really empowering thugs that would terrorize the citizens of St. Louis," Onder told KMOX's Kevin Killeen.

The bill (SR39) would allow permit holders to carry concealed guns on all forms of public transportation in Missouri, except school buses and Amtrak.

Opponents, including the Metro Transit system itself, warn it could make riders less safe, because shots fired on a crowded train could end up hitting innocent passengers.
