Blues forward Alexander Steen is retiring due to back injury

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - After 15 NHL seasons, St. Louis Blues forward Alexander Steen has announced he is retiring, due to a back injury he suffered last season.

Steen, 36, played in 1,018 career NHL games with the Blues and Toronto Maple Leafs. He scored 245 goals, tallied 377 assists (454 points) and won his only Stanley Cup championship with the Blues in 2019.

The Blues say Steen has "multiple levels of degenerative herniated discs of his lumbar spine."

Steen and his wife Josefine are also celebrating the birth of their second child, a baby boy, who was born late Wednesday night.

Steen, 36, finished last season playing in 55 games, scoring seven goals and adding 10 assists. He played in his 1,000th NHL game on February 1, 2020 in his hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Steen will end his Blues career 4th in club history with 765 career games, 9th in goals scored (195), 6th in assists (301) and 5th all-time in points. In career playoff games as a Blue, he ranks T-3rd with 91 games played.
