ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - This 2021 reunion tour of Adam Wainwright and Yadier Molina just gets better and better with each game they start together. St. Louis Cardinals were treated with another special moment in Sunday's extra-innings loss to the Chicago Cubs.

The game was No. 282 for the batterymates – which ties Red Ruffing and Bill Dickey of the New York Yankees (1930-46) for the fifth-most in MLB history. On their next start together, they'll be tied for 4th all-time with Don Drysdale and John Roseboro of the LA Dodgers (1958-67).

And Wainwright was maybe the best we've seen in a long time. He threw eight innings of shutout ball, allowing only one hit, struck out seven and walked one. It's the only the third time in his career he's pitched at least eight innings and allowed only one and no runs.

But a possibly even more-rare moment happened when Wainwright had a bat in his hand in an important situation. With the game still scoreless in the bottom of the seventh, no one out and runners on second and third, Waino came up in a clear sac-bunt situation. The Cubs knew it too and brought in a new pitcher to face Wainwright.

That's when Molina stepped in to show his teammates, best friend and brother, something. The catcher called Wainwright back to the dugout, pulled out an iPad and showed him video of the new pitcher, Ryan Tepera.

He says they also just talked some "game planning."

"To talk with a pretty smart baseball mind is a good thing," Wainwright said after the game about the moment.

Wainwright got the bunt down and thanks to a slightly off-line throw from the pitcher, everyone was safe:

Our next chance to see more magic moments from these two will likely be this weekend when the Cardinals are in Arizona to face the Diamondbacks.
