(KMOX) - After mustering just two hits and in the first 10 innings against the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night, it seemed the St. Louis Cardinals offense was in famine mode – then in the 11th they feasted.
Paul Goldschmidt and Tyler O’Neill homered that inning and the Cardinals beat the Brewers 6-1 for their fourth straight victory. They've won 10 of their last 12 and are tied with the San Francisco Giants for the best record in the majors (22-14).
Here are some other ways the Cardinals are leading or near the top of major statistical categories:
Tied for 4th in MLB for shutouts - With two shutouts of the Rockies over the weekend, St. Louis has five total this season. One led by the 8.1 shutout-inning performance by Adam Wainwright on Sunday.
Bullpen not giving up long balls - The St. Louis bullpen has allowed only six home runs thus far – good for the second-lowest in baseball. Starting pitchers aren't bad either, only allowing 18 which is tied for fifth-best.
Doing damage with the long ball - With two more dingers last night, the Cardinals are tied for eighth in all of baseball with 46 home runs. Paul DeJong has seven, while Goldschimdt, Nolan Arenado and Tyler O'Neill have six each to lead the team.
Alex Reyes tied for 2nd in all of MLB in saves – His opportunity to record an 11th save was blown last night when the Cardinals broke out the bats in the top of the 11th. But he's got a 0.47 ERA this season.
Tommy Edman 2nd in NL in hits - The Cardinals leadoff man is doing his job and doing it well. And when he scores, St. Louis wins – they are 15-0 in games when Edman scores a run.
Top of the lineup is deadly - After Edman, the Cardinals have three other players who are top-20 in the NL in hits: Arenado (6th - 39), Dylan Carlson (14th - 36) and Goldschimdt (17th - 34).
The oldest players in the NL are leading the way - The oldest player in the NL is Wainwright. He was two outs away from being the only pitcher in the league to have two complete games this year. Yadier Molina is the second-oldest player in the NL. His 18 RBI are tied for second-most by a NL catcher and his .312 average is fifth-most for NL catcher with at least 22 games played this season.
