Cardinals 'hope' players will get COVID-19 vaccine as soon as tonight

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Members of the St. Louis Cardinals could get vaccinated against the coronavirus as soon as tonight, according to president of baseball operations John Mozeliak.

He announced on Monday morning that he "hopes" there will be doses of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine waiting for the team in Cincinnati, where they will get ready for Opening Day on April 1. St. Louis plans to leave Jupiter, Fla. after Monday's 11:05 a.m. spring training game.

Mozeliak says the plan if to administer the doses to all members of the team's "travel party," which would include the 26-man roster, coaching staff, medical staff and more. He says getting doses into players on Monday night would allow for two full days of rest before Opening Day, incase some suffer from reported side effects of the vaccine.

General side effects of the J&J vaccine include headache, feeling very tired, muscle aches, nausea, fever.

Mozeliak says he doesn't know of any players or staff who may refuse the vaccine but is "hopeful people will do it."

The Houston Astros team is also reportedly set to receive a COVID-19 vaccine on Monday night.
