ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Today is one of the most important and special annual celebrations in Major League Baseball – it's Jackie Robinson Day. The day when we honor the anniversary of Robinson’s historic MLB debut as he broke baseball’s color barrier.
Today and tomorrow all players, managers, coaches, umpires and all other on-field personnel will wear the No. 42, which was Robinson's number for all 10 years of his Hall of Fame career.
To honor him, St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Jack Flaherty wrote a short letter, to express what Robinson means to him. Flaherty's letter reads:
Dear Jackie,
We have an opportunity to play baseball because of all the hate you went through to play this game. For that I am forever grateful and for that I will never take this game for granted knowing how lucky that I am to be out there.
Jack Flaherty
A number of other players wrote similar letters to Robinson, which were shared by MLB on social media:
The Cardinals have the day off today, so they'll be celebrating Jackie Robinson Day on Friday in the first game of the weekend series against the Phillies.
