ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - It was the youngest member of the St. Louis Cardinals that helped set a new, very old, franchise record on Opening Day in Cincinnati.
Rookie right fielder Dylan Carlson crushed a three-run home run off the foul pole to cap a six-run bottom of the first inning on Thursday. The runs were the most scored by a Cardinals team on Opening Day for a road game in franchise history (since 1900).
And the 22-year-old also became the youngest Cardinals player to hit an Opening Day home run since 1936, when Eddie Morgan, 21, did it.
The big first inning was started by a Paul Goldschmidt double, then Nolan Arenado and Paul DeJong hit back-to-back singles to brining Goldy home. Yadier Molina's ground ball to the shortstop was missed for an error, which brought home a pair of runs, then Tyler O'Neill was hit by a pitch to set up Carlson's blast.
