ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - In the acquisition of Nolan Arenado the St. Louis Cardinals are getting a Gold Glove third baseman, one of the best hitters in baseball and also a "billboard guy," according to broadcaster Joe Buck.

The former KMOX voice and current face of Fox Sports MLB and NFL broadcasts explained the special something that Arenado is bringing to St. Louis.

"The Cardinals finally have a billboard guy," Buck says. "Somebody that can be on a billboard, can sell tickets, merchandise and is somebody that represents the present and the future, not the past. And that's what it's about.

"They got a bona fide superstar and a hell of a guy. I mean, this city, once they get to know him, they're gonna love this player."

Buck spoke to KMOX sports director Tom Ackerman about the blockbuster trade and the entire package that Arenado comes with. And you can hear that full interview here:

Buck told a specific story about "Nolan Arenado the person" and described a moment during the 2019 MLB All-Star Game weekend when he was tasked with finding players to interview for a kids show. While other players were looking for an excuse to get out of it, Arenado had a much different approach.

"He said, 'Absolutely let's go do it,'" Buck says. "And on the way down I was like, 'Man, I owe you. Thank you so much.' And he's like, 'Are you kidding me? This is great, I love doing this kind of stuff.'"

And even when Buck hoped to return the favor, Arenado said "absolutely nothing."

"When I read that (Arenado's former teammate) Matt Holliday said that nobody he's ever played with is more into baseball than Nolan, I think that's what he's saying," Buck says. "The guy just loves the game, wants to grow the game."
