ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Yadier Molina and Albert Pujols have been "brothers" since they first met in 2004 when Molina's MLB career began. The former St. Louis Cardinals first baseman gave some very high praises of his little brother, saying he believes Yadi is the "greatest catcher of his time."
In a conversation with Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Pujols named Molina as one of his favorite teammates of his career, along with Edgar Renteria, Fernando Vina, Mike Matheny, Woody Williams, Yadier Molina, Jimmy Edmonds and Darryl Kile.
He explained that Molina's parents even told him to treat Yadi "like your little brother."
Pujols shared that it has been a dream of his to retire and possibly go into the Hall of Fame at the same time as Molina.
"I always tell him, let’s finish together. Let’s retire together. That would be awesome," Pujols told USA Today.
Pujols is in the final year of his contract and Molina signed a one-year deal to return to the Cardinals this season.
The current Angels slugger was asked about those who say Molina's stats aren't deserving of the Hall of Fame:
“That’s a joke. You kidding me? He’s the greatest catcher of his time. It’s not even close. Defensively, he might be the greatest of all time. Some of these people don’t appreciate greatness, they just look at numbers on their computer.
“I always tell people the Cardinals could afford to let me go, but they couldn’t afford to let Yadi go anywhere else. That pitching staff and that organization would never have the success without Yadi. He’s meant everything to that organization.’’
