ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The reunion with catcher Yadier Molina and the St. Louis Cardinals (and Adam Wainright) appears to be almost complete. Molina is reportedly expected to sign a deal with St. Louis after he plays for Puerto Rico in the Caribbean Series.
MLB Network insider Jon Morosi reported that Molina is expected to sign a deal with St. Louis after the international baseball tournament, which ends on Feb 6. Derrick Goold of the Post-Dispatch and The New Day news station in Puerto Rico previously reported that an offer made to Molina by the Cardinals is expected to be signed.
The Cardinals have not made public comment about a possible deal with Molina.
Molina, 38, has been the face of the franchise for the better part of the last decade.
This offseason when he became a free agent, it was the first time since 2000 that the sure Hall of Fame catcher was not part of the Cardinals organization. He was rumored to have interest from at least half of dozen teams.
The Puerto Rico native was drafted in 2000 by St. Louis and since his MLB debut in 2004, has become known as one of the best defensive catchers in baseball history. His nine Gold Gloves are third most for any catcher, behind only Johnny Bench (10) and Ivan Rodriguez (13).
And now he'll have more time to climb the Cardinals franchise record books. He's currently top-10 in team history for WAR (10th), games played (3rd), hits (6th), home runs (10th), doubles (4th), RBI (7th) and sacrifice flies (1st).
Molina has won two World Series and been to a nine All-Star Games.
He also made this offseason an interesting one, with some cryptic posts on social media, saying he was contemplating retirement and would leave open the possibility of playing for another MLB team.
His return means the reuniting of St. Louis' most legendary battery, of him and Adam Wainwright. The 39-year-old pitcher signed a one-year deal with St. Louis this week.
