New York Mets owner Steve Cohen told reporters at general manager Billy Eppler’s introductory press conference that his recent controversial Twitter account wasn’t going anywhere, and it didn’t take long for him to put up another eye-opening tweet.
The Mets team owner sent out a tweet calling out Steven Matz’s agent on Wednesday morning, declaring to his 227,000 followers that he has “never seen such unprofessional behavior exhibited by a player’s agent” after Matz reportedly agreed to a four-year deal with the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night.
Cohen and New York reportedly had an offer out to Matz, and according to Audacy MLB Insider Jon Heyman, the Mets were under the impression that they would have a chance to match St. Louis’ deal for four years and roughly $44 million (Matz’s deal with the Cardinals is worth up to $48 million).
“I’m not happy this morning,” Cohen tweeted. “I’ve never seen such unprofessional behavior exhibited by a player’s agent. I guess words and promises don’t matter.”
Matz's agent released a statement Wednesday morning, saying that he has reached out to Cohen:
The Mets certainly could have used the starting pitching help, as they have already lost Noah Syndergaard, who signed with the Angels after receiving an $18.4 million qualifying offer from New York. Team president Sandy Alderson told WFAN that, like Cohen is claiming with Matz, that the Mets weren’t given the chance to match Los Angeles’ offer for Syndergaard. In addition, Marcus Stroman is a free agent.
Matz, drafted by the Mets in the second round back in 2009, spent all six of his big-league seasons with the Mets until last season, after he was traded to the Blue Jays in January. He went on to have one of his best big-league seasons, tossing 150.2 innings and posting a 3.82 ERA with a 3.79 FIP and 144 strikeouts.
