What do the Cardinals need? The fans answer…

(KMOX) - No one likes a four-game sweep by the Cincinnati Reds at Busch Stadium. Well, except the Reds.

No matter how you look at the losses, or the 11 total injuries that have stacked up in the process, this is a results-oriented business. Winning matters. And the Cardinals did not do any of it in their return to Busch Stadium this past weekend.

So on Monday morning, as I sipped my cup of coffee and hosted "Total Information AM" on KMOX, I decided to throw the question out there to the consumer. Cardinals fans are standing by, ready with suggestions.

So I prompted them on Twitter:

The responses were wide-ranging, as you can imagine. But not entirely off base.

Let me break some news to a few of you, though. The Cardinals are not going to replace their front office or their manager. And they're not going to change ownership, OK?

Now that we have that out of the way, here are a few samples and my comments:

Yes, Ryan. I agree that the Cardinals "All-Injury Team" is a very competitive bunch on paper. The issue here is that time is short, and of this group only Yadier Molina and Paul DeJong would appear to be ready to return soon. Bader is going to be a while longer. I don't know enough about KK's back. Flaherty, Mikolas and Hicks are out for a while. Hudson is out for the season. The Cardinals don't have enough time to wait much longer. I'd be open to pursuing a trade or two to stabilize the rotation and the bullpen.

I can't argue with this, Donny. But I'd definitely put starting pitching as my top priority. They need to go deeper into games.

This is along the lines of my thinking. Pitching, pitching, pitching.

Like. M-I-Z...

I'll be honest, I don't think a change in hitting coach is going to do much. Yes on pitchers.

Nah, I love 'em. Heck, I grew up as one. I get them. Believe me, you don't want a passive fan base. That's boring.

HI KYLE... wait, are you asking for Matt Holliday?

...Z-O-U!! Seriously, the addition of Max Scherzer would inject the team with energy, rejuvenate the rotation and add another relentless personality in the clubhouse. But it will come at a cost. (Not money, they have plenty of that.) Are you willing to give up a top prospect? If he is available, there will be competition for Scherzer, the Parkway Central and Mizzou alum.

Indeed, it is not time to freak out, hit the panic button, etc. The sky is not falling. But the pitching staff is extremely stressed. They need help.

Thank you, Rene.

Too soon, Mark! ;)

We'll see what they have this week against the Indians.

This weekend: Cubs at Wrigley.

Next week: Full capacity at Busch Stadium.

Trade deadline: July 30. (Will it be too late?)

Stay tuned...
