(KMOX) - With his next start, St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina will have 1,955 career starts at catcher – the fifth most all-time in Major League Baseball. It will likely happen on Tuesday night against the Chicago White Sox, but the official lineup has not been released yet.
You might be thinking, "Didn't we just celebrate Yadi for reaching 2,000 games earlier this year?" You're not wrong. But that was about games played at catcher – in which he's the first to ever reach 2,000 with one team. But this time it's about starts at catcher.
He's passing late Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter. Here's who he's chasing down next:
1. Iván Rodríguez – 2,346
2. Carlton Fisk – 2,097
3. Bob Boone - 2,091
4. Jason Kendall – 1,990
5. Molina – 1,955
It's not a stretch to believe that Molina can end his career in the No. 2 spot on this list. If he stays healthy this season and resigns with a team (maybe the Cardinals, maybe not) that will start him consistently, he can get the 143 starts he needs to surpass Fisk.
But we'll wait until the offseason to worry about that.
