Calls to invoke the 25th Amendment and remove President Donald Trump are growing, including Bay Area Congresswoman Jackie Speier.
"This domestic terrorist group that was incited by the president of the United States cannot be tolerated," she said of Wednesday's events in Washington, D.C. "I am one that believes the 25th Amendment should be exercised. We should take the power away from President Trump over the next 14 days."
Speier spoke to KCBS Radio’s Patti Reising and Jell Bell.
"I have thought for some time that Donald Trump wanted nothing more than to become that dictator and he has shown very clearly to all of us now that he is not prepared to continue to be president for the next week," Speier continued.
On the subject of possible impeachment, brought up by Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar, Speier said "impeachment won’t happen fast enough."
According to CBS News, there has been conversation amongst members of President Trump's own Cabinet of invoking the amendment. While they have not formally presented the idea to the vice president, it's also not clear if the group has the eight supporters - or a majority of the Cabinet and Vice President Mike Pence - required to invoke.
Speier joins a chorus of similar thoughts from lawmakers around the country.
"It was clear that they were going to try and break into the House Chamber," she described. "We were told to lie face down on the marble floor in the gallery. Eventually, we were escorted out. As we left, I saw a number of protesters that were face down who had been apprehended."
Speier, who herself was shot five times outside the Jonestown commune as events there spiraled out of control in November 1978, spoke candidly about her experience in both situations.
"It was a mob," Speier said. "They were breaking windows to get in. They got into the Speaker’s offices, evidently. They were in the Senate Chamber and sitting at the Deis. We have no idea what kind of damage they did or what they have taken."
