At a news conference early Saturday morning, Edwardsville Police Chief Mike Fillback said the severe storms came through around 8:30 pm, collapsing a significant portion of the facility. Fillback told reporters that huge chunks of concrete, hanging live wires and flooding from the building's fire suppression system hampered rescue efforts as first responders arrived.

Police confirm two deaths, at least one other person hospitalized, and other minor injuries. At least 30 workers were transported from the site by Madison County transit and Fillback says other employers left on their own. Officials do not know how many employees were on site at the time and say they are working with Amazon officials to determine who may still be unaccounted for.

Responders were still on scene Saturday morning.
