ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A special ingredient to add to your next omelet, garnish on a steak or eat all by itself as a snack may be found very close to home. The Missouri Department of Conservation says it's officially chanterelle mushroom season across the state.

The funnel- or trumpet-shaped mushrooms are growing wild right now through August in the summer heat. You can likely find some by looking on the ground of moist woodlands and in river bottoms. They are bright orange and yellow and have a network of wrinkles and ridges down the stem, MDC says.

Chanterelles are certainly edible and are used by many European chefs, often in pasta dishes. One of the most popular ways to cook them is to slice and panfry them in butter.

And if you pick too many to consume now, you can just sauté and freeze them for safe, long-term storage.

MDC also says to remember where you find them this year because they're likely to grow again in the same places next year.
