On Tuesday, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker signed a bill banning semiautomatic weapons in the state. While many celebrated the bill’s passage, an action taken in response to a mass shooting in Highland Park, IL last summer, some critics didn’t hold back their disdain.
State Senator Darren Bailey, who unsuccessfully challenged J.B. Pritzker for the Governor’s office last year, took to Twitter to air his thoughts, saying: “I’ll die on my front porch before anyone takes my guns away. My message to Springfield: If you want my guns, come get them.”
Bailey joined KMOX to talk more about his stance on the bill. The legislation doesn’t take semiautomatic weapons away from current owners, but does require that they register their guns. But Bailey said the end goal of the bill is indeed to take guns away from people.
“The government doesn't need to know what I have. And not only that, but these are our Second Amendment rights as written and protected in our US Constitution,” Bailey told KMOX. “There shall be no infringement.”
Bailey told KMOX more about what he believes will prevent mass shootings, and how he thinks the bill will affect Illionisans on Total Information AM. Listen:
