
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (KMOX) - Residents from Springfield to areas near St. Louis felt and heard the sonic boom caused by a F-15 EX Strike Eagle Fighter Jet Tuesday afternoon.

The Illinois Emergency Management Agency confirmed that the "large noise and shaking" around 11:20 a.m. was from an "F-15 fighter jet in the airspace above central Illinois course corrected creating a sonic boom."
Some flight tracking software clocked the jet traveling more than 1,100 mph – 75% faster than the speed of sound. No injuries were reported from the sonic boom, as determined by an investigation between federal, state and local officials.
Sonic booms are created by shock waves when an aircraft flies faster than the speed of sound, which is 761.2 mph.
The F-15 EX Strike Eagle fighter jets are made by Boeing and can reach speeds of 1,875 mph.
Several counties in central Illinois report hearing the boom, including the Springfield Police Department and Sangamon County OEM. Police even received calls from Greene County, Illinois, which is just north of St. Louis.
