(Updated 10-17-2022) Parents could find out more Tuesday night from the Hazelwood School Board about the radioactive contamination found at Jana Elementary school.

The Parent Teacher Association at Jana Elementary School in Hazelwood has warned parents in an email that test results show "high levels of radioactive lead inside the school."

This will be the first regular meeting of the board, since last Friday's report found "high levels of radioactive lead" in the school cafeteria, library and on the playground. Some are calling for the school to be immediately closed, for classes to be held elsewhere, until the property is decontaminated. The school district has said it's meeting with lawyers and other experts to decide what to do. A district spokesman Monday wouldn't say how many students were kept home by their parents.

The radioactive lead has been found specifically in the cafeteria fan, the boiler room and the school library. Test results also reportedly show high levels on the school playground near the kindergarten play area and the basketball court.

The school began testing in August, just days before school started for the year. At that time, the PTA president Ashley Bernaugh told KMOX she was worried about the prospect of radioactive contamination because the school lies right near Coldwater Creek, which is known to contain radiation.

The district sent a letter in August to parents saying they believed it would be safe for students, staff and visitors to go back to school. But because test results weren't available, parents were given the choice to keep their kids at home and follow lessons virtually.
