ST. LOUIS (KMOX/AP) — St. Louis police are investigating and the mayor's office is calling for charges after an attack that injured two guards at the downtown Justice Center — the same jail where more than 100 inmates staged an uprising earlier this month.

The latest attack happened Friday, when a 23-year-old inmate began punching and kicking a 56-year-old female lieutenant because he claimed he had not received food “in a timely manner,” according to a police summary.

Two other inmates allegedly joined in the attack and then beat another guard who tried to close a cell door. The second guard is a 30-year-old male.

Police say the guards suffered facial bruising and swelling. It was not clear if either was hospitalized. The female guard was taken to Urgent Care with scrapes, bruises and swelling.

So far no charges have been filed. Mayor Lyda Krewson's spokesman Jacob Long says "we feel they should be charged--assaulting a corrections officer is not OK."

A spokesman for Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner tells KMOX News they're checking to see if any charges are going to be filed for the recent trouble.

Friday’s attack was nearly two weeks after about 115 inmates commandeered the fourth floor, setting fires and breaking windows. Inmates also beat up a guard.

The uprising prompted the establishment of a jail task force to assess jail conditions.
