ST. LOUIS (KMOX) -- A local podcaster is striking while the iron is hot. Mindy Hudson from Jefferson County Library has started a true crime podcast called Murder & Mayhem.

Meanwhile, true crime podcasts are atop the most listened to almost everywhere. Seven of the top ten on toppodcast.com right now are murder mystery or true crime podcasts.
Hudson tells KMOX, "I love research and I have an obsession with the morbid. I thought it would be fun to do a podcast about the seedier things that happened in Jefferson County over it's two-hundred-plus year history."
The first episode is about Henry Gasche who was brutally attacked in his bed with an ax in 1872. His wife, Caroline, is the prime suspect. Was she a cold blooded killer or is there more to the story?
Some of her stories go as far back as 1790. That's 31 years before Missouri became a state.
A new episode of Murder & Mayhem in Jefferson County, Missouri is released every Tuesday evening at 5.
Why are we so obsessed with murder?
The amount of true crime stories being made into podcasts continues to grow. Which begs the question: why are we so obsessed with murder?
Mindy Hudson says, "You get to have the thrill of the horror without it actually affecting your life." She says, "It's like when we pass by a car wreck, you can't help but turn around and look at the wreck."
To help shed some light on this dark topic, Amy Konsewicz, the Director of Behavioral Health at SSM Health, joined St. Louis Talks.
"Psychological thrillers," Konsewicz says, "appeal to our need to understand the psychology of the person committing the crime." The entire interview is available below.
