The Missouri History Museum opened a new exhibit Saturday that celebrates the history of soccer in St. Louis. “Soccer City” tells the story of how the sport evolved here, starting in 1875 with the first recorded match between two teams of lawyers – the Blondes and the Brunettes.
The exhibit also notes that one of the country’s first women’s soccer matches took place in St. Louis in 1909. The exhibit will have items from teams throughout the decades – the Stars, the Steamers, the Ambush and of course, City SC.
The museum’s managing director of public history Sam Moore said the exhibit will also honor stars from St. Louis, including Taylor Twellman, Lori Lawson (Chalupny) and Becky Sauerbrunn, all former US national team players.
“We should not underestimate in St. Louis the amount of talent, the number of superstars that come from our region,” said Moore.
Soccer City features game-worn jerseys, balls, interactive games, films and other artifacts.
“You’re going to see Charlie Colombo’s boxing gloves that he would wear when he was on the field in the 1950s,” Moore said. “You’ll also see the first goal-scoring ball for City SC. We have the ball from the club’s first-ever goal. We also have a jersey from their first home game.”
Soccer City runs through early 2024 at the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park.
