Missouri, Illinois National Guard summoned to DC for security, safety around Biden's inauguration

Will support local authorities through inauguration.

JEFFERSON CITY, MO (KMOX) - Members of the Missouri National Guard are heading to Washington D.C., to help provide security for President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration next Wednesday, Jan 20.

The guard isn't saying how many troops or which units will be involved.

While in D.C., the guard members will support civilian law enforcement agencies with security, communications, medical evacuation, logistics and provide safety to district and federal agencies.

The authorization is for up to 31 days.

Governor J.B. Pritzker is also activating several Illinois National Guard units to help guard Biden's inauguration. Approximately 200 members have been called to active service to help ensure safety and security.

Forces activated include about 100 Military Police soldiers out of Bloomington, a small medical team, and approximately 45 airmen out of Scott Air Force Base and units based in Springfield and Peoria.

At the direction of Governor Parson, the Missouri National Guard is providing assistance to the D.C. National Guard, where they will support civilian law enforcement agencies with security, communications, medical evacuation, logistics, and safety to district and federal agencies through the presidential inauguration. These National Guard professionals remain under the control of the Adjutant General of the Missouri National Guard and will conduct their duties under Title 32, 502 (f) orders and adhere to DC law. Civilian law enforcement officers are responsible for the safety and security of all personnel. The Missouri National Guard will provide assistance as requested. The Missouri National Guard is well trained and equipped for this mission and previously provided like assistance in DC in June of 2020.

Due to operational concerns, we cannot give specific numbers of troops or units involved in ongoing efforts.

The Missouri National Guard stands ready to support the D.C. National Guard as long as needed. The current authorization is up to 31 days.
