Jefferson County Sheriff Dave Marshak released information about the incident which happened on a private property in Dittmer, Missouri. He says, according to a family attorney, a juvenile was walking to a tree stand on the property to hunt deer with a bow and arrow.

Police say he saw a man attempting to steal a lawn tractor and wood splitter from the property. Juvenile called his father who arrived a short time later and confronted the man. They say the man ran towards the juvenile, who shot the man with an arrow and killed him.

"The attorney stated the juvenile warned Stotts several times to stop and was in fear of his safety as Stotts came closer," police stated. "The juvenile subsequently released an arrow."

Michael J. Stotts, 40, of Dittmer was killed by the boy, who's name and age have not been released. Police say the boy was not arrested.

They say the property has been the site of several recent thefts and an investigation is ongoing.
