ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - You can now send a slice of St. Louis-made Gooey Butter treats to friends or family members anywhere in the country thanks to a local restaurant and bakery. Much like toasted ravioli, pork steaks, provel cheese and bread-slicing your bagel, a gooey butter cake is a staple of St. Louis cuisine.
Russell's, with two locations in Fenton and South City, announced plans to ship their popular Gooey Butter dessert nationally starting Dec. 14.
Russell’s will offer seven flavors in total including: Original, Chocolate Chip, Triple Berry, Pumpkin Walnut, Cranberry Orange Walnut, Lemon Curd and Snickerdoodle. Each cake ranges in price from $15.95 - $17.95, not including shipping.
They say if you want it to arrive by Christmas you'll need to place the order by Dec. 21.
Russell’s signature gooey butter is different than the traditional St. Louis staple. While Russell’s Gooey Butter has a dense, sweet, butter-rich base like the classic, the filling sits atop a from-scratch salted shortbread cookie crust for a more balanced bite.
“You’ll notice that we always refer to ours as just Gooey Butter – that is intentional. The addition of the shortbread crust makes for the perfect sweet desserts that isn’t cake nor cookie," Self-taught Chef and Owner Russell Ping explains. "It’s just gooey butter! It’s been a favorite since my mom and I opened Russell’s in Fenton over 15 years ago.”
He says people have been asking them to ship their products outside of the St. Louis area for years and they've finally been able to pull it off.
Orders can be placed over the phone (South City at 314-553-9994 or Fenton at 636-343-8900) or online here.
