CLAYTON, MO (KMOX) - While the state of Missouri is expanding the list of those who are eligible to receive the coronavirus vaccine, it will be a while before those who qualify will receive it in St. Louis County.

The state has announced that first responders can begin receiving it now, and those over 65-years-old and those with comorbidities can start getting it Monday. The problem, there aren't enough doses.

County health department spokesman Christopher Ave tells KMOX the county received 975 doses last week and seven thousand healthcare workers are signed up to get them.

"So, we are scheduling those people, we started on Friday," he says. "We continue vaccinating this week but we will, very soon, run out of doses."

Ave says people in the new categories can begin applying when the next shipment comes in, which is expected to be Tuesday. The county doesn't know how many doses it will receive.

He estimates over 100,000 county residents will fit into those categories.

"Until we get more vaccine we won't be able to vaccinate those folks," he says. "We will certainly start scheduling them in for vaccinations as soon as we get another supply of vaccine."

St. Louis County residents who want to apply to receive the vaccine should either send an email to dphcovidvaccine@stlouisco.com or go to stlcorona.com
