ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The large encampment of homeless in downtown St. Louis is being removed by the order of Mayor Tishaura Jones due to safety concerns.
The shut down and clean up of the latest tent city in St. Louis began Friday morning.
St. Louis parks employees brought a bulldozer, pitchforks and picks to clean up Interco Plaza, next to St. Partick's Center and the new headquarters of Square off Tucker Boulevard. But it's not going happening easy as some of the people who were living there say it's not fair and no place for many of them to go.
One man stood at the site with a sign that states "I DO NOT CONSENT TO BEING FORCIBLY REMOVED FROM THIS SPOT"
Jones says the camp is a health threat.
A murder near the encampment on Sunday night caused the managers at Square to temporarily closed its newly redeveloped downtown office building. The camp had about two dozen tents, two portapotties and people loitering throughout the day.
Jone's office told KMOX in early July they hoped to relocate the homeless tent-dwellers someplace else in 30 to 60 days, using funds from the American Rescue Plan.
