ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - About 14 months ago, the St. Louis Metropolitan Pandemic Task Force was formed and held weekly updates that were shared live on social media to inform the region about COVID-19. Monday afternoon will be the final of its weekly press conferences.
Incident commander Dr. Alex Garza spoke to KMOX and says this doesn't mean the pandemic is over for the St. Louis region. He says it's shifting to a "recovery and stability phase."
"I know the definition for when you call it a pandemic, which is when it's affecting two or more regions," Garza says. "So I would think when you would declare the end of the pandemic is when you have the transmission of the virus suppressed enough across the globe."
You can watch the 11:30 a.m. final update on Facebook, here. And listen live on KMOX to hear part of it.
Garza says he tells his kids, that they'll be telling their kids about surviving "the great pandemic of 2020."
"This is a huge moment in history that I think it's going to take a little bit of time for us to figure out, 'What was that, that happened to us?'"
He says it's "fair" to say that the worst of this is behind us for the greater St. Louis area. He says that's as long as a "new crazy variant" doesn't comes along.
