St. Louis Pandemic Task Force leader says 'drastic measures' may be necessary to contain virus

Dr. Alex Garza says incoming Biden administration has few options to make big impact on surging virus

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - As COVID-19 cases surge in the St. Louis area and around the country, the head of the St. Louis Metropolitan Pandemic Task Force is hoping the pending change at the top of the federal government will have a positive impact on the effort to contain the virus.

However, Dr. Alex Garza, who has served as chief medical officer at the Department of Homeland Security, says with so much virus out there, it's hard for him to think of any game changing strategies that are going to significantly impact the pandemic.

"We're at a point now," Garza says, "where I think it will take some sort of drastic measure to alter the case of the cases and the hospitalizations and things like that. It has really gotten that bad."

Garza tells Total Information AM Sunday what options the incoming administration might have to consider, "Mandatory masking across the nation. Some sort of modified shutdown where you try to keep as much business and schools going while discouraging people from going out and going into gatherings and things like that."

Garza hopes having a President who wears a mask and will fight the virus more robustly will help, but he says with the country so divided, he's not sure it will have enough of an impact to alter the course of the pandemic.
