ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The infamous Loop Trolley could be running again if supporters get the money they're asking for. But results of a new Twitter poll say an overwhelming amount of people are hoping to avoid another "money pit" situation.

Supporters of the failed public transportation system in a St. Louis shopping, food and entertainment district are asking for $1.26 of federal grant money to get it back on track, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

So we asked our followers what they thought about the 2.2 mile trolley that stretches from U-City into Forest Park reopening with the help of taxpayers' money?

The result was more than 86% of the more than 400 voters saying "no."

And there were some strong replies about the idea as well. Some called it a "boondoggle," "money pit" and "mistake."

The money they're asking for would come from the East-West Gateway Council of Governments that's looking to fund programs that "ease traffic congestion and improve air quality," the Post-Dispatch reports.

Already, $51 million dollars has been spent on the trolley line.

The trolley faced numerous mechanical problems since it started operating in late 2018. It broke down on its final ride in December of 2019, stranding riders for 45 minutes.

Ridership was also lower than expected, too.
