The household goods company Colgate-Palmolive has announced a recall for more than 4.9 million units of its multi-purpose cleaner Fabuloso due to potential exposure to harmful bacteria.
On Wednesday, the Consumer Product Safety Commission posted the recall notice, saying that the products may contain Pseudomonas-species bacteria, an environmental organism commonly found in soil and water.
The recall affects five different scents of Fabuloso, lavender, refreshing lemon, passion fruit, spring fresh, and ocean, the CPSC notice said.
The cleaning product’s website also shared information about the recall, saying that potential bacteria exposure is a result of a manufacturing issue. The company shared that while producing the cleaning product, a preservative wasn’t added to the necessary levels, resulting in the chance of bacteria being present.
“With inadequate preservative, there is a risk of bacteria growth in the recalled products,” the notice says.
Bottles of Fabuloso affected by the manufacturing issue were made from Dec. 14, 2022, to Jan. 23, 2023, the recall said. Items were sold online at Amazon.com and in-store at Dollar General, Family Dollar, The Home Depot, Sam’s Club, Walmart, and other major retailers nationwide.
Though the recall number is 4.9 million bottles, the company shared that 3.9 million were never released for public sale.
Those with weakened immune systems, external medical devices, or underlying lung conditions exposed to the bacteria are at risk of severe infection, which could result in hospitalization, the CPSC shared.
According to the recall, the bacteria can enter the body through the eyes, a break in the skin, or by being inhaled.
No injuries have been reported as a result of the recall. The CPSC shared that anyone who purchased one of the recalled items should stop using them immediately and contact Colgate-Palmolive Company for a full refund or replacement product.
