(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A political scientist at Northern Illinois University said Monday what’s happening in Afghanistan is concerning but maintains an ugly ending was all but inevitable.
Dr. Ches Thurber said given how long American forces were in Afghanistan without achieving victory or exiting earlier, there was no potential for a good outcome.
“One of the things that is most scary about it is that because the Afghan government fell so quickly, that did not give the United States the time to get civilians out,” Thurber said. “Many of them are likely to be targeted by the Taliban in the future for their collaboration with the United States.”
He said the focus must now shift to helping Afghans who have been a major asset to Americans over the last 20 years. He concedes he’s concerned for what the future may hold.
“It may be too late. Too many people may already be in harm’s way,” he said.
