It appears that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis could be laying out a timeline for when he will make his decision on whether or not he will run for the Republican nominee in the 2024 presidential election.
DeSantis is viewed as one of the top two favorites among Republicans to receive the nomination, the other being former President Donald Trump. However, despite Trump announcing his campaign exceptionally early, DeSantis has yet to declare a 2024 presidential run.
During an interview with the Fox News show “Fox & Friends,” DeSantis was asked when a decision from him could be expected. While he didn’t give a straightforward answer, DeSantis did map out his next few months.
The governor shared that he is about to embark on a tour for his book, “The Courage to be Free,” and then work through his state’s legislative regular session, beginning in early March and ending in May.
“You ain’t seen nothing yet,” DeSantis said. “This is going to be the most productive Legislative Session we have had across the board, and I think people are going to be really excited … So those are what we’re going to be doing over these next few months as we get beyond that, then we can decide from there.”
Recent polls have shown DeSantis remains the top, if not only, challenger for Trump, who has been taking shots at his former ally, despite him not yet announcing a campaign.
A Washington Post-ABC News poll from earlier this month found that among Republicans and independents who lean right, 49% would rather see someone new on the ballot than Trump again, compared to 44% who want Trump for a third time.
This comes after a poll from Club for Growth found that DeSantis would be favored in a matchup against President Joe Biden, while Trump would lose in a rematch.
Trump has not taken the headlines favoring DeSantis over him lightly, beginning his barrage against the Florida governor by calling him names like “Ron DeSanctimonious” but, most recently, “Meatball Ron.”
Trump even went as far as to make vague pedophile accusations against DeSantis after photos surfaced of the governor at a college party when he was younger.
Despite this, DeSantis has remained focused on his state, addressing the comments saying he spends his “time delivering results for the people of FL .. that’s how I spend my time. I don’t spend my time trying to smear other Republicans.”
While he did not give an explicit answer to whether or not he will run in 2024, DeSantis’ comment was the most he’s given so far. Even still, Republicans will have to wait to see if he tosses his hat in the ring.
