Democratic congressional candidate Cori Bush tweets about plan to 'defund the Pentagon'

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A tweet from Cori Bush, the Democratic congressional candidate from St. Louis, about wanting to "defund the Pentagon" is drawing criticism from Missouri Gov. Mike Parson and others.

Bush, who defeated longtime Rep. Lacy Clay in the August primary tweeted on Tuesday, "If you’re having a bad day, just think of all the social services we’re going to fund after we defund the Pentagon."

Her message has been retweeted nearly 5,000 times and has 2,400 comments. The movement to "defund police" began in Minneapolis earlier this year after the latest incident of an unarmed Black man being killed by a white police officer.

Parson says Bush's wishes would have dire consequences locally.

"When you start talking about defunding police and defunding the military, it's a dangerous road to go down," Parson said in a conversation with our partner station, KFTK. "The economy that Fort Leonard Wood (U.S. Army training), that Whiteman (Air Force Base), the NGA for crying out loud. $30 billion worth of income to the state, 180,000 jobs."

Bush's opponent in the November election, Anthony Rogers, tweeted and said Bush “might be a little slow" in response to her tweet.

KMOX has reached out to Bush's campaign for comment and is waiting for a reply.
