ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOX) Ballplayers will be running around chasing a baseball on newly cut grass that will look oh so familiar for Opening Day.
Director of Facility Operations and Planning for the Cardinals Hosei Maruyama tells KMOX the arch is etched into the outfield of Busch Stadium. The special lawn art is reserved for special occasions to appease MLB field standards.
The grass field is all-new. "One of their off season projects," Maruyama says, "[The] new sod is called HD Sport 2.0. It's from a sod farm in Littleton, Colorado." He says it's a hybrid mixture of Kentucky bluegrass, grown on plastic and sand, that's supposed to give it stronger roots that holds up against players' cleats.
The new dark green grass is a cold weather variant that keeps it's color in colder Spring and Fall months.
