JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMOX) - Missouri's highest health official who has been leading the state's COVID-19 pandemic response, Dr. Randall Williams, resigned from his position, announced Gov. Mike Parson on Tuesday.

He was appointed to his position as Missouri’s Director of Health and Senior Services by former Gov. Eric Greitens.

"Dr. Williams has been a huge asset to Missouri, especially this past year in dealing with COVID-19," Parson says. "We greatly appreciate all the work he has done for the people of our state and wish him the best in his future endeavors."

Gov Parson has appointed his deputy chief of staff, Robert Knodell, as acting health director.

"Over the past year, he has played an integral part in the state’s COVID-19 response efforts and taken a leading role in vaccine rollout and distribution in Missouri," stated a press release from the governor.

Parson accepted a letter of resignation from Dr. Randall Williams on Tuesday.

According to Missouri COVID-19 Dashboard, more than 1.4 million residents – or 34.5% of the population – have been fully vaccinated, as of Tuesday.
