UNDATED (KMOX) — It appears the St. Louis Battlehawks will be cleared to engage XFL opponents once again in 2022.
New XFL co-owner Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson announced that the league will return in Spring 2022.
It wasn't made immediately clear if the BattleHawks will be back in the third iteration of the XFL, but the announcement video features numerous footage of the BattleHawks during games this past season.
Last month, Johnson and his business partner/ex-wife Dani Garcia purchased the shuttered league, alongside investment firm RedBird Capital, for $15 million. It happened hours before it was set to go to bankruptcy auction.
The league ended its re-inaugural 2020 season on March 12, citing difficulties due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Less than a month later, league president Jeffrey Pollack announced the league would dissolve.
The initial shutdown in March came as eager BattleHawks fans were buying upper bowl seats at America's Center for a highly-anticipated matchup with the Los Angeles Wildcats that weekend.
In the weeks following the cancellation of the season, BattleHawks QB Jordan Ta'amu joined the Kansas City Chiefs, where he currently serves on the practice squad. Safety Kenny Robinson was drafted by the Carolina Panthers in the 5th round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He's currently on the Panthers' practice squad.
