TERRELL (1080 KRLD) - Police say a 17-year-old Terrell High School student was found shot to death Wednesday morning and they have a teenage suspect in custody.
The body of Junior Damaria Jackson was discovered in a yard Wednesday morning about a mile from the school. Police now say they have a 16-year-old in custody who has been charged with murder after hours of investigation and interviews. Police initially said they had a person of interest in custody on an unrelated charge and they were looking into a second suspect.
Police and the school district say there is no threat to the school or the students, but officers were at the school as a precaution. The school will have counselors available as well.
Terrell ISD has issued the below statement:
"We realize that this will be a time of mourning and that our students and staff need time to process their grief. Counselors will be on hand for any student or staff member who may need to speak to someone.
Additionally, Meet the Tigers, which was scheduled for this evening, Wednesday, August 16 at 6PM will be canceled.
Our hearts go out to Demaria’s family and we grieve with them and for them. Let us come together as Terrell Tigers and give this family the support and love they need and deserve."
