Dallas (1080 KRLD) - Police say three people were killed Sunday night at a block party in Northeast Dallas. They say people who live in a neighborhood near the High Five were celebrating the Fourth of July.
About 11:15 p.m., police say an argument led to someone opening fire in the street outside the party. The shooting occurred across the street from Hamilton Park Pacesetter Magnet Elementary School.
Three people died; two others were hospitalized. Monday morning, police had not updated the victims' conditions or released anyone's identity.
Police had also made no arrests.
Earlier in the weekend, Chief Eddie Garcia said the City of Dallas would work with community groups to try to prevent violence. Through the first six months of 2021, the crime rate in Dallas was outpacing 2020. In 2020, Dallas had 251 homicides, the most in 16 years.
"We will bring every tool to bear, both conventional and non-conventional," Garcia said. "We will have officers vigilant. We will also be working with businesses and other entities throughout our city."
The city launched the "Dallas CRED" program last month.
"The senseless killings have caused all of us to band together to put all differences aside and say, 'Something has to be done,'" says Mar Butler, program director of Dallas CRED.
Garcia says the Fourth of July weekend is the city's second busiest after New Year's. He said Dallas Police would be adding patrols to handle calls about people setting off fireworks, firing guns into the air and reports about road rage or drunk drivers.
