In partnership with the SPCA of Texas, NewsRadio 1080 KRLD brings you 'Adoptable Pet Pals,' a weekly feature to introduce you to animals that are ready for adoption.

KRLD's Kristin Diaz along with Maura Davies from the SPCA highlights the critical need for adopting families at local animal shelters by showcasing an "Adoptable Pet Pal" that has stayed at the shelter too long.

Meet this week's featured Pet Pal, Garbanzo!

He’s a handsome Pittie with white fur and dappled brown spots who came to the SPCA of Texas as a stray from the City of Italy. He’s figured out that hanging out with humans is much more fun than going it alone, so he wants a forever home with people-parents. He’s 2-and-a-half years old and weighs 68 pounds. This is a happy dog with a lot of energy. It is so much fun to sit back and watch his happy zoomies when he really gets going. This would be a great dog to have for a home with a securely fenced backyard that is solid and at least six feet in height. Garbanzo loves attention from people, but he’s not too fond of hanging out with other dogs. So Garbanzo would be happiest if he was the star of the show and the only dog in the home.

Meet Barrett!

He is an American Blue Heeler mix who came in to the SPCA of Texas’ Ellis County Animal Care Center a couple weeks ago now. He is an affable fellow of approximately 10 months in age and 38 pounds in weight. He has the tell-tale spotted heeler pattern, but with a majestic brown hue. He is very intelligent and inquisitive, though he might be a little timid at first meeting. Barrett was brought into the shelter as a stray but is hoping to leave in the company of a loving forever family. He seems to do well around children and other dogs, so bring the whole gang in for a meet-and-greet before adopting. The Ellis County Animal Care Center is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from noon to 6 p.m.

Meet Milo! UPDATE: Milo has been adopted!

Meet Milo! This guy is a certifiable bundle of fun, just sitting back and watching him go in the play yard. He is a Terrier, Pit Bull mix who only weighs 38 pounds full grown; what is often referred to as a “Pocket Pittie.” He was brought into the SPCA of Texas as a stray in July 2021. He is a rather particular fellow and doesn’t always take too kindly to other dogs, so he would definitely prefer to be the only dog in the house. It would also be best to have all kids in the home at least 10 years old. A backyard with a secure fence would be a great benefit for Milo as he does like to romp around. Milo is at the Russell E. Dealey Animal Rescue Center, so a prior appointment is necessary to meet with him in person.

Meet Shayla! UPDATE: Shayla has been adopted!

Meet Shayla! She is an American Pit Bull mix waiting for a forever home with the SPCA of Texas. She has a light brown-over-white coat and a big smile. She weighs only 37 pounds, which is very light for the breed. Shayla is a very timid dog and strangers can make her very nervous, so a potential adopter may want to visit her more than once to get a good feel for her personality. From there she can be taken out for a trial adoption to make sure the fit is good all the way around. When she gets to know someone and becomes good friends, then she is all wiggles when they arrive. Shayla would prefer to have the humans’ attention all to herself, so she would do best as the only dog in the home.

Meet Miuna!

Meet Miuna! This is one pretty little black kitty. Miuna is a Domestic Shorthair mix who is just over a year old and just over 7 pounds. This dainty little lady has big, wondering yellow eyes that are simply captivating. Miuna is a sweet little girl but she is also very timid, so it may take a short time for her to warm up to new people. She would be happiest if she went to a home with another confident and friendly cat already on the grounds. Even then, she’ll need a small period of alone time to acclimate to the new environment. Playful small children would be very frightening for Miuna, so she would prefer to go to a home with teens and adults only. She is at the Jan Rees-Jones Animal Care Center, so no appointment is necessary to meet her.

KRLD values the connection between animals and people. Through the incredible selflessness of animal advocates who rescue, rehabilitate, foster and adopt animals, we hope to be partners in finding safe and forever homes for these animals in need.

Regular adoption fees are $150 for puppies and kittens aged 0-6 months and $75 for adult dogs and cats aged 6 months or older. Fee includes spay/neuter surgery, age-appropriate vaccinations, a heartworm test for dogs six months and older and a FIV/FeLV test for cats 4 months and older, initial flea/tick preventative and heartworm preventative, a microchip, 30 days of PetHealth Insurance provided by PetHealth, a free 14-day wellness exam with VCA Animal Hospitals, a rabies tag and a free leash.
