In partnership with the SPCA of Texas, NewsRadio 1080 KRLD brings you 'Adoptable Pet Pals,' a weekly feature to introduce you to animals that are ready for adoption.
In this week's edition of 'Adoptable Pet Pals,' KRLD and the SPCA of Texas highlight pet pals that are currently living in foster homes and have not been exposed to the distemper outbreak that has temporarily shut down the shelter. The halt on intakes and adoptions at the shelter will be lifted in mid-July.
Meet Zeus, our featured 'Adoptable Pet Pal' this week!
UPDATE: Zeus has been adopted

Zeus is a big ole’ male Pit Bull, Terrier mix weighing in at a whopping 98 pounds. At first sight, Zeus can seem big and tough, but the truth is he is a complete goofball. He has made great appearances at the SPCA of Texas mobile adoption events where everybody loves to pet him and remarks on how friendly he is, but he has not found his own forever home yet. Zeus came to the SPCA of Texas after his previous owners found out they were in violation of their lease restrictions. He is six years old and will sit for treats. He usually does well with other dogs but doesn’t really like cats at all. Zeus is a very inquisitive and intelligent dog. He would love to have a big backyard with a secure fence to play in, but the type of fence is important as this smart guy has figured out how to climb chain link fences.
Update: Cider was ADOPTED!

Cider is a male Retriever, Labrador mix who is 5 years and 8 months of age. He is a large dog who weighs 67 pounds with tan fur. Cider came to the SPCA of Texas in pretty rough shape and has had a long road to recovery, but he’s up and at it now and ready to find his forever home. Cider is a chill character, in fact, his foster says he has never heard Cider bark. He is a bit of a couch potato, not that interested in treats but really seems to enjoy petting and hanging out with humans. Cider might make a great companion for someone in retirement. Cider has a corneal opacity in the left eye, but he doesn’t let that bother him too much. He doesn’t really have any special home requirements, he is just looking for a place with a lot of love to share.
Meet Louie!
UPDATE: Louie has been adopted

Louie is a large mixed-breed dog available for adoption from the SPCA of Texas. He has blonde hair and weighs in at 44 pounds. He is under two years of age so he has a lot of energy and quite a silly disposition. Louis was unfortunately abandoned by the side of the road, and fortunately found his way to the SPCA of Texas. He is currently in foster care, so an appointment will be necessary to meet with him. Louie likes people but he is not so fond of other dogs at this point, so it would be best if he was the only pet in the home. He is also very young, large and excitable so any children in the home should be over the age of 12. Adopting Louie comes with free training and six weeks of post-adoption support, and he is available on a foster-to-adopt basis.
Meet Barbie!
UPDATE: Barbie has been adopted

Barbie is a 50-pound Shepherd mix currently available for adoption from the SPCA of Texas. She is almost 5 years old now. She has been in foster care, so an appointment is required to meet her. Barbie came to the SPCA as a scared little lady, and has had to work on fearful behavior. However, she has come a long way since then and really seems to enjoy people now. She also seems to do well playing with other dogs too, so any other dogs in the household should come down to meet with her before adoption. Barbie would love to have a big backyard with a secure fence to play in, but she might do well in a low-key apartment setting as well. Because of her size, all children in the home should be at least 12 years old. She is available on a foster-to-adopt basis.
Regular adoption fees are $150 for puppies and kittens aged 0-6 months and $75 for adult dogs and cats aged 6 months or older. Fee includes spay/neuter surgery, age-appropriate vaccinations, a heartworm test for dogs six months and older and an FIV/FeLV test for cats 4 months and older, initial flea/tick preventative and heartworm preventative, a microchip, 30 days of PetHealth Insurance provided by PetHealth, a free 14-day wellness exam with VCA Animal Hospitals, a rabies tag, and a free leash.
The Jan-Rees Jones Animal Care Center is currently closed to visitors
and volunteers as the SPCA of Texas works to address an outbreak of
canine distemper virus in the shelter. Some dogs in foster and cats at
off-site PetSmart locations are not affected. Appointments are
available for select foster animals. Please browse available animals
at spca.org/findapet and visit spca.org/dogadopt to inquire about a
dog or spca.org/catadopt to inquire about a cat.
KRLD values the connection between animals and people. Through the incredible selflessness of animal advocates who rescue, rehabilitate, foster and adopt animals, we hope to be partners in finding safe and forever homes for these animals in need.
