Affidavit details Timberview HS shooting and events leading up to it

ARLINGTON (1080 KRLD) - We're getting a clearer picture of the events that led up to Wednesday's shooting at Mansfield Timberview High School.

Timothy Simpkins, 18, is charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and is now out of the Tarrant County Jail after posting a $75,000 bond.

A video making the rounds on social media was taken moments before the shooting.

"It was approximately about 9:15 that morning when we received several 911 calls that there was a fight," says Arlington Asst. Police Chief Kevin Kolbye, "and then subsequently there was a shooting."

Even though Timberview High School is part of the Mansfield ISD, it is located in the City of Arlington.

Based on witness accounts described in the arrest affidavit, the fight between Simpkins and a 15-year-old boy took place in a classroom.

After the fight was broken up and the 15-year-old stopped being combative, Simpkins had allegedly pulled a gun from his backpack and fired as many as eight shots, critically injuring the boy.

"He went into surgery; and thankfully, he is out of surgery as of yesterday," says Asst. Chief Kolbye. "He's still listed in critical condition, but we hope and we're praying for a speedy recovery."

A 25-year-old teacher was also hit by the gunfire and remains hospitalized in good condition.

A third person was grazed by a bullet and was treated and released.

Simpkins' family says the 15-year-old boy had been bullying him, and Asst. Chief Kolbye says police are investigating that.

He says even if that is the case, two wrongs do not make a right.

"Even if you're bullied, it does not justify you carrying a weapon and shooting individuals in a fight.," Kolbye says.
