The Texas Workforce Commission held job fairs across the state Thursday ahead of Veterans Day Friday. The job fairs called, "Hiring Red, White and You" took place at 28 locations across Texas.
Among them were events at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Gilley's Dallas and the Plano Event Center.
"I'm currently looking into either security or law enforcement or the logistics side," one man who says he left the Army about a year ago said. "I'm just looking for a job that suits my skills and the education I learned from the military."
One small business owner says her husband is a veteran, and she likes the skills service members gain.
"They've got a lot of real-world experience. I think it's a good idea to hire some," she says. "They get trained on teamwork from the start. That's what's going to get everybody going again is teamwork."
Another veteran said the military gave him experience in fields that are in demand now like construction and transportation. He says the military has given him skills that would apply in any field.
"You need to think quickly just to make sure you will solve the problem," he says. "But you need to make sure, while you do that, everything will be done accurately and precisely."
The Texas Workforce Commission first launched veterans job fairs in 2012. Since then, the agency says it has worked with 20,131 employers and helped 114,778 veterans find jobs, including 3,198 who were hired the same day.
The national unemployment rate was 3.7% in October. The unemployment rate among veterans was 2.7%, down from 4.4% in October of 2021.
