FORT WORTH (1080 KRLD) - Governor Abbott was in Fort Worth to sign a bill that almost triples state funding for border security.

Abbott signed House Bill 9, providing an additional $1.8 billion in funding for things like DPS arresting more people at the border and building the border wall.

"These funds are needed because the Biden administration's open border policies have opened the floodgates to illegal immigration, to crime, to human trafficking, to drug smuggling," Abbott said.

State Senator Jane Nelson, whose district includes portions of Tarrant County, says the border crisis is not limited to just the immediate border region.

"Texas is a border state and this is impacting every part of our state," Nelson said.

The funding is in addition to the more than $1 billion that the legislature approved during the regular session.
