A burning mound of trash in White Settlement was apparently left there by the trash truck driver, according to police.
The first 9-1-1 callers reported the fire along Bomber Road outside the Lockheed plant and the US Air Force Plant #4. Firefighters hurried to the scene and quickly poured on the water to keep the fire from spreading.
Investigators now believe a trash truck driver saw his load on fire so he quickly dumped the flaming trash on the roadside to prevent the fire from engulfing his rig.
Ironic as it may seem, the trash was dumped right next to a sign saying "U.S. Government Property. No Dumping or Trespassing."
White Settlement police say they contacted the trash company and public agencies to make sure the trash was picked up again once it was safe.
